Fiji - The South Pacific's Soft Coral Wonderland

Please note that package inclusions and prices are subject to change

Following the February 2016 Tropical Cyclone Winston, we have been compiling reports from the Fiji dive resorts we know and love. Here is the news as of March 1, 2016:
  • Fiji Aggressor - The Fiji Aggressor and crew are safe and sound, and are looking forward to welcoming guests for their next scheduled cruise on March 5, 2016.
  • M/V Nai'a - NAI’A is ship-shape and the crew is keen and committed as ever to finding outrageous little creatures, sharing encounters with big critters and framing scenic images of swarming fishes over vivid coral.
Nai'a Report on Reef Conditions after the Storm
  • Matava Eco Resort, Kadavu - Unaffected, business as usual. A bit of rain but the storm pretty much passed them by. The resort did not lose power, nor did they close; all staff and guests are safe and sound.
  • Lalati Beach Resort, Pacific Harbour - “We are blessed to have Winston leave Lalati virtually untouched. Yes, we do have some debris clean up going on, but all structures as well as staff, management, and guests have remained unscathed.” The resort was never without power or water, and remained open as Winston passed to the north.
  • Beqa Lagoon Resort, Beqa Island - As their press release said, “Our grounds got a bit fuffled in the wind, but all staff, guests, structures and boats are fine.” The resort did not close and hosted a full house during the storm.
  • Matangi Resort, Matagi Island, just off the coast of Taveuni - - "Matangi Private Island Resort is pleased that most importantly, all are safe and sound on our island home and further, that we sustained no structural damage. The strong winds did hit the island’s vegetation, gardens and grounds fairly hard. The cleanup process is well underway and we are ready and willing to welcome your clients and our guests with our very special brand of Fiji Island hospitality immediately, albeit with a few less palm fronds waving in the background!"
  • Wananavu Beach Resort, on the north side of Viti levu - Garden debris around the resort but no damage. They closed temporarily so staff could care for their families and also to tidy up the resort, but reopened February 26, 2016.
  • Qamea Resort, on the island of Qamea, just off Taveuni - On Friday, February 19, the eye of the storm passed about 20 miles from Qamea with winds clocked at over 200 MPH. The resort did not sustain structural damage but the nearby village is devastated. The owners of the resort have set up a bank account specifically to be used for water purification, needed medicine, food and rebuilding homes for the villagers.
  • Garden Island Resort, on the island of Taveuni - Thank you to everyone that has reached out with concern about the well-being of the resort and staff at Garden Island Resort. We are relieved to report that the staff at Garden Island have made it through Cyclone Winston unharmed. Garden Island Resort has sustained moderate damage. The resort is currently closed and repairs are already underway. The resort is expected to be fully operational as of April 1st.
  • Paradise Taveuni, Taveuni - "Thanks for your message and kind thoughts. Paradise Taveuni sustained large damages during TC Winston on the 21st of February 2016 and therefore we have closed the Resort to rebuild Paradise and will be reopening in May 2016."
  • Namena Island Resort, Savusavu - Rick Skauge wrote: "I am the owner of Namena Island Resort located on the Namena Marine Reserve in Fiji. The resort sustained a direct hit and was completely wiped out. We will be assessing the underwater damage in the next few weeks and that will determine how fast the resort will be rebuilt."
  • How you can help - Reports state that 30,000 Fijians are currently homeless due to the Cyclone. Many of you have asked what you can do to help. The best way to help is to donate to an organization that will access and distribute supplies needed locally. That can be best accomplished by donating directly to the Fiji Red Cross Society. The Prime Minister of Fiji has also established a relief fund: Fijian Government Disaster Relief Fund.

This small luxury Fiji resort offers individual beachfront and ocean view bungalows, all handcrafted from local materials, one villa plus three Tree House Bures overlooking the beach and ocean.

Matangi's private cottages set within lovely tropical gardens, along with a main dining and lounge area, a fleet of boats and a dive facility, plus three tree house honeymoon cottages built 30 feet off the ground in the embrace of ancient almond trees.

In addition to some of Fiji's best scuba diving, Matagi is also wonderful for its beautiful white sand beaches, hiking through the lush rainforest, or a cultural visit to one of the local native villages. An opportunity to experience the weekly Meke (Fijian party with lots of singing, dancing and traditional foods) and the demonstration of warrior dances is itself well worth the price of admission.
