The whale shark is the biggest fish in the ocean. Every year, from June to September, whale sharks pass in front of Holbox Island following the stream of plankton. Courtesy of Yucatek Divers, you can enjoy the unique experience of snorkeling with these amazing (and completely harmless) animals.

Holbox Island is situated three hours north of Playa del Carmen at the very corner of the Yucatan Peninsula. This day trip departs Playa del Carmen at 4 a.m., in a comfortable van, to arrive in the early morning at a small fishing village called Chiquila. Here you are picked up by a boat, for the one-hour boat ride to the island of Holbox.

On the trip over, it is common to encounter dolphins hunting sardines. Once at Holbox, you will have about three hours to swim with the whale sharks and often manta rays as well. On the way back you can see flamingos at Punta Mosquito. In Holbox you will have lunch before starting the drive back to Playa del Carmen.
