TAWALI RESORT -- Tawali is located in a secluded area of Milne Bay, set amongst local fishing villages and accessible only by boat. Built on a limestone bluff eighty feet above the water, Tawali offers guests a private retreat in which to enjoy the wonders of Papua New Guinea (PNG). At the most Tawali will accommodate twenty divers with ease, which makes your vacation a very intimate experience. Tawali was constructed by local craftsmen and you will find beautifully carved totems and woodwork in the spacious main lodge and throughout the resort. Some of these works of art took two years to complete and are unique to the Milne Bay culture.
COMMUNITY -- Tawali is a unique resort built entirely by the local population with all carvings and woodwork painstakingly produced entirely by hand. Since there had never been electricity in this remote location prior to Tawali's completion, all the woodwork from framing to finished wood floors was done completely with out the help of power tools. Every board that needed to be cut, every carving and most of the furniture was built on-site, by hand. This project has been a great boost for the local workers. Villagers who had never before been able to have jobs were trained by more experienced carpenters so that when Tawali was completed they had new skills to help them get better paying jobs.
LODGING -- This level of craftsmanship and attention to detail continue in Tawali's guest accommodations. Covered walkways lead away from the main building and observation deck to Tawali's beautifully appointed bungalows. These guest buildings are set around the top of a bluff. Each is complete with its own private balcony overlooking the splendors of Hoia Bay and the surrounding forest. Each building houses two rooms or bungalows. Even though they share a common wall, all bungalows are completely private. The air-conditioned bungalows are spacious with two queen beds and rosewood interiors that include desks, closets and lounge areas. All bungalows have individual solar powered hot water systems and are air-conditioned with beautiful tiled bathrooms and private decks. Amenities include a personal safe and coffee making facilities.
DINING -- Papua New Guinea is very diverse in it's cuisine, from fresh barramundi cod cooked in a wrapping of banana leaves, to roasted chestnuts and mouth-watering fresh fruits. Great care has been taken to make sure that the food is abundant and properly prepared. Local villagers have been taught the art of bread making and food presentation by several visiting chefs. Local farmers raise the fruits and vegetables served at Tawali and they take great pride in the freshness and variety of the foods. Breads, desserts and snacks are freshly-made. Beverages are always easily available. Besides the beautiful main dining room, guests are able to dine outside on the veranda overlooking the rainforest. The dining room features 18-foot tall carved totems, beautiful hand-crafted wood details and a spectacular wall containing a collection of rare bottles found on dives in Samurai Bay. Three buffet style meals are served daily, with snacks, juices, coffee and tea included throughout the day. Canned sodas and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase at the Tawali bar.
THE DIVING -- The diverse scuba diving opportunities from Tawali Resort are both amazing and convenient, with the best diving of Milne Bay just minutes away. Tawali's location is unique in that it offers the best of both exotic critter diving (also described as "muck diving"), and prolific blue water diving with schooling fishes and pelagics.
COASTAL DAY DIVES -- Tawali's remarkable Coastal Day Dives include the best of Milne Bay muck diving as well as wonderful walls with an abundance of soft corals, large sea fans, anemones with clown fish and large pelagics such as hammerheads and whale sharks. Trips are scheduled for mornings and afternoons with two dives per trip. Diving on coastal sites is done from two 22-foot boats with twin 50-horsepower Honda engines. Each boat carries a maximum of only six divers.
OUTER REEF DIVES -- Outer reef dives in Milne Bay offer a chance to experience beautiful pinnacles with abundant and varied marine life; as well as walls with anemones, sea fans, sharks and other large pelagics. All dives are within a 25 to 40 minute boat ride from Tawali and include three-tank dives with lunch served on the boat, or ashore on nearby islands where guests can explore the verdant surroundings. Outer reef diving is done from the comfort of a 37-foot Catamaran, serving a maximum of 12 divers.
M/V CHERTAN Live-Aboard Option -- For the ultimate dive experience, add a two or three day cruise aboard the 60-foot M/V Chertan to experience remote locations outside Milne Bay. Now based at Tawali, M/V Chertan remains under the operation of Rob Van der Loos who has been diving the waters of Milne Bay for over 25 years. Rob and M/V Chertan will take you to exotic locations that few divers ever get to experience. Sleeping 12 passengers, with a minimum load of 6, the vessel has a comfortable salon and covered top deck. Rooms are air-conditioned and there are two bathrooms with showers on the main deck. There is plenty of room for camera work with a large table on the top deck and a two-tiered camera table on the main deck. M/V Chertan leaves from the wharf at Tawali, and a dive cruise may be arranged either before or after your land-based visit.
